Introduction

I have worked on a number of projects during my career. On this page, I'll give you a little introduction to a sample of them.

Please recognize that this is simply a small sampling of the projects I've been engaged in during my career. Over the 15 year span of my professional career, it would be impractical to attempt to list everything I have worked on.

University of Wisconsin - Stratagem

As a Stratagem consultant on contract at the University of Wisconsin, I functioned in a number of roles. I was the architect of the system. I functioned as team leader and mentor. I also was the project manager for the system.

The project was the recreation of the online application system for the UW system. It had originally been created in Oracle Web Forms. It was my duty to oversee the move from the old system to a more extensible and flexible system in Microsoft's .Net Framework.

At the UW system, we used a variety of technologies. Some of which included:

  • Visual Basic.Net
  • Oracle 10g
  • XML/XSLT
  • NUnit / NxBRE / NAnt

Full Compass Systems

Full Compass Systems is retailer of professional level audio, visual and lighting equipment. The majority of their buisiness is conducted via mail-order catalogs and telephone sales. They recognized how important eCommerce is and hired me to help them implement that. For a long time, I was the sole developer working on the system. I had to create the system from scratch, implementing the database schema as well as the web architecture. Eventually, the work became too much so another developer was brought on. I was responsible for directing his workload.

There were serveral parts which needed to be addressed. First, the website I inherited was a simple, static HTML site. I converted their website from the static site to a dynamic, database driven site. The product information was managed by the marketing group using a system I wrote for them.

While in the midst of working on creating an eCommerce enabled website, I also helped Full Compass establish a store front on EBay as well as on Amazon.com. This involved making use of the published XML WebServices and integrating the internal systems with them.

At Full Compass Systems, we used a variety of technologies. Some of the technologies we used were:

  • Visual Basic.Net
  • SQL Server - with triggers and stored procedures
  • XML Web Services
  • Integration with Informix and custom financial systems

Versaria - HBG NewMedia

HBG NewMedia was a developer of content management systems specifically geared toward the print publication industry. They started off with custom solutions for their clients before moving to a productized solution called Versaria.

At HBG NewMedia, our systems were all developed in Visual Basic 6.0 and Active Server Pages (ASP). We utilized an architecture which relied on COM+ components in the middle tier.

I was originally brought into HBG NewMedia as an ASP developer. From there, I was promoted to team leader and mentor. I was responsible for leading the graphics team and teaching them simple ASP integration with HTML. Before I left I was promoted again to COM+ developer where I worked on the business objects in the middle tier.

While working on Versaria, some of the technologies we used were:

  • Visual Basic 6.0
  • Acitve Server Pages (ASP)
  • SQLServer 2000
  • Visual InterDev
